ABSTRACT The safflower is an oleaginous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is used as a raw material for various purposes. These plants are popular for the quality and quantity of oil produced and, and thus, studying their genetic variability using markers is necessary for determining genetic resources to conduct breeding programs. Therefore, we evaluated the genetic variability of safflower genotypes using Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) molecular markers. The study was conducted at the State University of Mato Grosso “Carlos Alberto Reyes Maldonado”, in the Campus of Cáceres-MT. In total, 121 safflower genotypes from the Germplasm collection were evaluated using 21 SSR markers. The programs GenAlEx 6.5, GENES, and Structure were used to analyze the data. We identified 158 alleles at 21 loci among the genotypes. The expected heterozygosity (He) was high (0.551 - 0.804), but the observed heterozygosity (Ho) was low (0.000 - 0.502), and the indices of the endogamy coefficient (F) were positive in all loci and all populations, with an overall average of 0.958. The genetic differentiation (FST) values among populations were low, with an average of 0.010, which suggested a low population structure. The modified Tocher clustering and the UPGMA hierarchical clustering yielded 19 and 15 distinct groups, respectively. The genetic structure showed two populations, with few intermixes in the genome. The evaluated safflower genotypes showed genetic variability, and these genetically different variants might be used in breeding programs to obtain cultivars adapted to Brazil.

RESUMO O cártamo é uma oleaginosa da família Asteraceae, cuja matéria-prima serve para diversos fins. A cultura se destaca pela qualidade e quantidade de óleo produzido, neste sentido o estudo da variabilidade genética com o uso de marcadores é uma etapa inicial na exploração dos recursos genéticos em um programa de melhoramento. Diante disso, estimou-se a variabilidade genética de genótipos de cártamo via marcadores moleculares Simple Sequence Repetition (SSR). O estudo foi conduzido na Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso “Carlos Alberto Reyes Maldonado”, Campus de Cáceres-MT, onde foram avaliados 121 genótipos de cártamo da coleção de Germoplasma, utilizando 21 marcadores SSR. Foram utilizados os programas GenAlEx 6.5, GENES e software Structure para os respectivos resultados. O número de alelos detectados entre os genótipos considerando os 21 loci foi de 158, a He pode ser considerada alta, variando de 0,551 a 0,804, já a heterozigosidade observada (Ho) foi baixa, variando de 0,000 a 0,502, e índices de coeficiente de endogamia (F) foram positivos em todos os locus e em todas as populações, possuindo uma média geral de 0,958. Os valores de medida de diferenciação genética (FST) entre as populações foram encontrados baixos em média de 0,010, sugerindo baixa estrutura populacional. O agrupamento de Tocher modificado obteve 19 grupos, e o agrupamento hierárquico de UPGMA 15 grupos distintos. A estruturação genética demostrou duas populações, com poucas intermixagem no genoma. Os genótipos de cártamo avaliados possuem variabilidade genética, sendo possível explorar esta variabilidade em um programa de melhoramento genético visando obter cultivares adaptados ao Brasil.

Abstract The Mexican laurel (Litsea glaucescens) is one of the non-timber forest products with the greatest potential in the temperate forests of Mexico. While its ethnobotanical uses are numerous and centuries-old, there is little documented information on traditional knowledge or management of the species. Having this information would help maintain part of the biocultural memory and to apply conservation strategies. The objectives of the study were to document local knowledge and management strategies carried out by peasant communities of the El Chico National Park, as well as to determine harvesting locations and techniques. Fifty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted in the communities of Carboneras and Pueblo Nuevo, in addition to direct observation and visits to the park. All interviewees recognize and use the Mexican laurel, and the majority showed knowledge about the biology of the species. The Mexican laurel is fully integrated into the cultural context of the inhabitants of the protected area. The interviewees are aware of the phenotypic plasticity of the Mexican laurel, notable in its morphology, as well as its aromatic and taste characteristics. Although 9 out of 10 recognize that there are currently legal restrictions on collection it is still carried out at the domestic and commercial level.

Resumen El laurel silvestre (Litsea glaucescens) es uno de los productos forestales no maderables con mayor potencial en los bosques templados de México. Mientras que su uso etnobotánico es numeroso y milenario, hay escasa información documentada sobre el conocimiento tradicional y sus formas de manejo. Disponer de esta información ayuda a mantener parte de la memoria biocultural y aplicar estrategias de conservación. Los objetivos fueron documentar el conocimiento local y las estrategias de manejo realizado por comunidades campesinas del Parque Nacional el Chico, así como determinar los lugares y técnicas de cosecha. Se aplicaron 55 entrevistas semiestructuradas en las comunidades de Carboneras y Pueblo Nuevo, así como observaciones directas o recorridos en el parque. Todos los entrevistados reconocen y usan el laurel, la mayoría mostró conocimiento de la biología de la especie. El laurel está plenamente integrado al contexto cultural de los habitantes del área protegida. Los entrevistados detectan la plasticidad fenotípica del laurel, notable en su morfología, así como en sus características aromáticas y gustativas. Si bien nueve de cada 10 entrevistados reconoce que actualmente existen restricciones legales sobre la recolecta, ésta se lleva a cabo a nivel doméstico y comercial.

Resumo O objetivo desta pesquisa foi estudar o conhecimento ecológico tradicional (CET) relacionado à pesca feita por grupo étnico autoidentificado como quilombola, por meio da análise de fatores que influenciam o consenso cultural e as técnicas da pesca artesanal. Participaram 24 homens e sete mulheres dos quilombos Retiro, Boqueirão, Casalvasco e Manga. Os métodos de amostragem utilizados foram: bola de neve, lista livre e observação participante. Os resultados incluem 47 etnoespécies (46 peixes e um réptil). O consenso cultural é composto por: Hoplias malabaricus, Cichla sp., Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, Astronotus ocellatus, Satanoperca pappaterra, Brycon cephalus, Piaractus mesopotamicus, P. corruscans, Pimelodus sp., Colossoma macropomum, Pygocentrus nattereri, Mylossoma aureum, Astyanax sp. e Leporinus freiderici. Embora tenha sido maior a riqueza do conhecimento entre pessoas que residiram temporariamente em outros estados brasileiros, este aspecto não esteve relacionado à idade dos entrevistados. A manutenção e a transmissão de CET é propiciada por contato diário com peixes e com o rio desde criança, bem como por observação das práticas de pesca em grupo. O CET é parte da identidade e representa uma herança cultural que deve ser valorizada. É necessária a participação desses atores sociais nos planos de decisão e de gerenciamento de áreas protegidas.

Abstract The objective of this research was to study the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) related to fishing among the ethnic group self-identified as quilombola people, and it included analysis of factors influencing the cultural consensus and techniques used in artisanal fishing. Twenty-four men and seven women from the Retiro, Boqueirão, Casalvasco and Manga quilombo communities participated. Sampling methods included snowball, free listing, and participant observation. The results include a list of 47 ethnospecies (46 fish and one reptile). The cultural consensus is composed of: Hoplias malabaricus, Cichla sp., Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, Astronotus ocellatus, Satanoperca pappaterra, Brycon cephalus, Piaractus mesopotamicus, P. corruscans, Pimelodus sp., Colossoma macropomum, Pygocentrus nattereri, Mylossoma aureum, Astyanax sp., and Leporinus freiderici. While the wealth of knowledge tended to be greater among people who resided temporarily in other Brazilian states, this was not related to the age of the interviewees. The maintenance and transmission of TEK stems from daily contact with fish and the river, from childhood on, as well as observation of group fishing practices. TEK is part of their identity and represents a valuable cultural heritage. Participation by these social actors in decision-making and management plans for protected areas is necessary.
